Expanding Vindolanda's Network

David has recently been back at the site at Vindolanda's Roman Fortress expanding their telemetered network with the installation of an additional water quality sonde, multiple soil moisture sensors, a rain gauge and weather station. The team also used this opportunity to upgrade two of the old DataHubs with our new DataGateway.

Bulk Density & Compaction

Bulk density is an indicator of soil compaction. It is calculated as the dry weight of soil divided by its volume. Too high and the crop roots will find growth difficult, too light and the water retention is likely to be poor. Bulk density calculations have to made very accurately, and special sampling tools are available as a set. Stainless steel rings of a precise volume are driven into the soil.

Installing piezometers in New Zealand

The team in New Zealand have been using their window sampling kit to install groundwater bores down to 6m in a remote area in the South Island. The piezometers were installed using the lost cone method, and by midafternoon the six locations were drilled and level loggers ready for deployment.

Thel-mar Weir

The team have completed an installation of a V Notch Thel-Mar Weir used for measuring water flow within partially filled pipes. Available in multiple sizes, from 15cm - 40cm. The faceplate is engraved with both level and flow measurements (a choice between imperial or metric), so you can easily see and record the flow rate of the water in the pipe or channel.

These certifications are very important to us, and our processes and documentation which we adopt on a daily basis help to support a thorough and seamless audit. Within the same week of passing, we have received our new recyclable packing tape which aims to support our expanding process on sustainability.

DataNode Radio Frequency Logger

The vanwaltDataNode turns any sensor into a wireless unit. It sits at location and transfers sensor measurements to PC or a vanwaltDataGateway wirelessly using radio frequency up to 10 km line of sight. The DataNode is not limited to sensor or parameter, and can accept inputs from SDI-12, MODBUS and Pulse sensors.
